I get this with many apps which should work on very first start up, including Messenger, Messenger Lite, Excel and many others).

Phone fairly new, not altered in any way and no storage or memory issues. No other issues with phone or Android version (6.0) otherwise.

Any ideas?

You say:
Phone fairly new

Why is it still on Android 6.0 ?

If you recently purchased the P9000 you should have the P9000E with Android 7 at least
So you probably have been using your P9000 for a while.

Try these solutions for the unfortunately appname has stopped:

Clear out the app's storage
Uninstall and reinstall the app
Turn it off and on again
Last resort: do a factory reset

Farsi ray, the P9000 and the P9000E are two different phones. I have both and while the P9000E was shipped with  Android 7, my second P9000 shipped in September still had the Android 6. The P9000 has no NFC, no LED inducation and no wireless charging. I also couldn't find a working TWRP, nor does the N7 stock rom work on the P9000E.
