I'm looking to buy an extra charging/data cable on eBay but I've noticed that some sellers let you choose from a list of devices.
Why is this? Shouldn't any USB type-C cable be the same?
And which one do I choose now?

I've tried charging mine with my playstation lead (it's 3m long) and an adaptor on the end. I'd only get a 50% charge. God knows why

not all USB-C look-a-like cables are USB-C cables
according to Benson Leung there's good cables, and very bad cables.

i'm not sure if all those 'compatible model' use a different charging protocol.

Charging protocols are negotiated between the Phone and charger, not the cable.
Apple is the only company putting a chip in their cables. Standard USB (whichever plug type) has to conform to standards.
USB Type-C should be a standard cable and there shouldn't be any differences except materials used and build quality.

Nisei is correct. Quality makes the difference. Both of plugs and cables.

On top: the cable-length for Superspeed Plus-Specification (i.e. the maximum defined in USB3.1) is one meter.
A 3m cable is destined to cause problems.

If you need longer cables, you will need to use active USB-Hubs. But then you should rethink the whole situation, because USB is not meant for long distances.

Maybe someone can explain why my two USBc chargers don't work on my S8. I have one car and one mains charger. They have USB C plugs on both ends. Neither will charge my S8 yet they both charge my P9000. Seems like the two phones have different USB C plugs?
