This guide will show you how to restore your Elephone P9000 original recovery of 20160810, so you can install OTA 20170112 and also future updates. This worked for me but I spent hours of trying, so I made this guide for all of you. With this method you could also flash another recovery like TWRP (with cool additional functions) but I don’t know how this handles with the Elephone OTA updates…
Disclaimer: I don’t take any kind of responsibility, you do everything on your own risk!
I recommend you to backup all your data on P9000 before starting with this guide, although you should not lose any data during the process if everthing works fine...
You will need: Windows PC, USB-C cable, Elephone P9000 with 20160810
Step 1: Test if P9000 recovery is affected
Elephone screwed the P9000 recovery with OTA update 20160810. If you are on an earlier version you probably have another problem with the OTA 20170112 installation. This guide is for 20160810 users, but if you find the corresponding ROM to your system (you will need it in step 2.3) it should work the same
EDIT: Elephone has released ROM 20170112 for download and a tutorial http://bbs.elephone.hk/thread-12937-1-1.html#.WINN1BvhBPY for flashing. You could also follow my guide and flash the ROM 20170112, as some steps in Elephone's Tutorial are not very precise. If you flash the 20170112, be sure in step 2.3 to unselect only USRDATA in SP Flash scatter. I didn't test this.
- Turn off your P9000
- Start it with pressing both power and volume up button
- When white Elephone logo appears release buttons
- If P9000 enters the recovery mode, you will probably have another problem with the OTA (but you can restore the whole ROM 20160810 or flash the new ROM 20170112, if other solutions fail. In that case in step 2.3 in SP Flash Tool be sure to uncheck only USRDATA and flash everthing else)
- If the logo stays and after a while the P9000 boots normally your recovery is affected
Step 2: Prepare windows system and tools you need
This step includes unofficial downloads and installations, including unsigned drivers and .exe files... My security program did not find anything malicious but I am very sceptic with such things, so I recommend you to make a full windows image backup and after the whole process a recovery of that image (I can recommend Paragon: https://www.paragon-software.com/home/br-free/index.html ) or alternatively set up a virtual PC.
- If you are on Win 8.x or Win 10 you have to disable driver signature enforcement prior to the driver installation. Go to Step 2.1
- If you are on Win 7 and earlier go directly to Step 2.2
Step 2.1 Disabledriver signature enforcement (Win 8.x, Win10)
- Hold Shift while clicking “Restart” in start menu
- Click on “Troubleshoot” then on “Advanced options”
- Click on “StartupSettings” then on “Restart” button
- The computer will restart with the Startup Settings screen
- To disable the driver signature enforcement until next restart press on number key7 or F7 on your keyboard.
Step 2.2 driver installation
Download this package: http://www.mediafire.com/download/ctoz8rkjoqhiz1w/SP_Flash_Tool_v5.1604.zip and unzip it.
-In the folder „SP_Flash_Tool_v5.1604.000“ you will find „DriverInstall.exe“ click andinstall the drivers, there will pop up a security warning for each driver in the installation package, ignore and continue anyway.
-After successful driver installation, restart your computer.
-To test the correct driver installation go to the windows device manager (fastest way: type „device manager“ in the windows search box and click on the result).
-Turn off your P9000.
-When you connect the P9000 to your computer via USB there should pop up the VCOM driver (MediaTekPreLoader USB Vcom Port) in the section „Ports (COM & LPT)“ for a few seconds, then it disappears again and the P9000 will start loading. All fine.
-If driver installation didn’t work there are some other tutorials (check for example: https://tehnotone.com/windows-10-mtk-vcom-usb-drivers-for-32-64-bit-drivers-installation-tutorial/ )
Step 2.3 SP Flash Tool preparing
-Download the 20160810 ROM from here: https://mega.nz/#!ys4DTIxa!8rrL0aktVQ8W7Q4Et8fvQ8jk2tAxLZvJOJH48S9Vkyk and decompress it (if your computer doesn’t recognize file type .rar download and install for example WinRar from here: http://www.win-rar.com/download.html)
((Again: if you are on an older ROM than 20160810 search for the corresponding ROM files and make the following steps with that, the March ROM's are here 20160315 ROM https://mega.nz/#!GJwBQDTD!aSHRzH6adoKk3gepvwXfljHFhDFm6sKGk1hlJM93N0s 20160304 ROM https://mega.nz/#!SYkRWZiQ!CZnWMHphyJU2dD8LDjQpUHBeYRciVYlOWdf3KyfZmbQ ))
-In the downloaded folder „SP_Flash_Tool_v5.1604.000“ from step 2.2 click on „flash-tool.exe“.
-SP FlashTool starts. Windows may pop up a warning, ignore and continue.
-In SPFlash Tool click on „scatter loading“ on the right side
-Navigate to the decompressed „Elephone_P9000_20160810“ folder and select the „ MT6755_Android_scatter.txt“ file
-SP FlashTool should load the scatter file
-On the left side unselect everething else but „RECOVERY“
-Above make sure „Download Only“ is selected
-Turn off your P9000
You are ready for flashing
Step 3 Flashing recovery
-In SP Flash Tool click „Download“
-Connect your P9000 via USB while pressing „Volume up“. The flashing process should start indicated by the colored loading bar in bottom section of the tool
-After the process is finished a message „Download ok“ should pop up.
-Start your P9000 to test correct booting
-To check if recovery works properly start your turned off P9000 in recovery mode by pressing both power and volume up button. When white Elephone logo appears release buttons. If it enters recovery mode you were successful
-Now you can install the OTA 20170112.
I am totally disappointed by the elephone after sales support. The manufacturer himself screwed the recovery wirh the OTA 20160810 and they knew it for sure from then on, even I did... They never released any information, tools, guides or such to repair this problems, customers have to inform and restore all by themselves with suspicious files and tools from somewhere on the internet. I will not support this company in future!
I really hope this guide worked for you and you don’t get any problems and in worst case brick your phone because of a clear fault by Elephone.
!! Thank you all for the mostly positive feedback and @Newton @farsiray and others for the support in the thread !!
